People are deciding not to come to our churches because we have allowed them to become country clubs where we pantomime discipleship or to be German/Swedish cultural centers, not because we finally got the courage to love God’s own children.

So, dear Church, you are already queer.

Church, you aren’t defined by a particular identity. You can love anyone who loves you back. You have ace folks who are great companions. You have trans folks serving faithfully. You have men who kiss each other. They are already here in our pews. They always will be. Church, you are already queer.

We need courageousness and a fierce spirit to accept what is already our reality. It’s time to talk about the truths we have had such trouble facing, Church. It’s time to talk about the future. Our future as a church is gloriously queer. Let me tell you a secret: during my formation in our seminaries, in my contextual education and internship, the places where I learned the practical ministry work, I never served under a straight pastor.

I have no idea what that is like. None. I learned to love the people of God, to preach the gospel, to administer the sacraments, to lead a church, all from LGBTQIA leaders. The professors who affected me the most, who helped shaped my theology, are queer or ardent allies and accomplices to the LGBTQIA community. This is not abnormal. This is how it has been for two thousand years in our church. The difference is that the church has allowed these folks to live only partially into their identities. Even now, after 2009, we are light-years away from truly accepting or affirming these leaders.
